Reflection of class on Feb. 9th
This chapter 12 is about visual cues which are important for guiding viewers’ attention when they look through a complex graphic.
The author talks a lot about how to use diverse visual cues like arrows, colors and eye gaze to emphasize significant area of a graphic, particularly I really like the interesting eye gaze content on page 222.
Just talking about the Figure 12.9 on page 223, the person image inside makes the who poster more vivid and interesting. When I first perceive this poster, I was attracted by the motion of the man and his eye gaze. The man cups his chin in his right hand and look to the upper left area, it’s the typical motion when someone is interested in something in the upper left corner with expectant eye gaze.
The title of this poster is “product training for new employees” and the eye gaze implementation here extremely makes it more outstanding than just put the black parallelogram on the reddish orange background. The eye gaze here not only guides viewers’ view to the title but also creates a close relationship between title and person image to form a preceded information that every will be interested on this topic.

Of course, eye gaze is a little difficult to implement in a visual design because it can influence the visual hierarchy a lot than other factors like arrows or colors. Designers should consider a lot about the contents and purpose before making a decision on using eyes gaze otherwise viewers will ignore something important imperceptibly around the person images.
