Reflection of class on Jan. 19th
In today’s class we talked about the difference between poster and flyer, I said that poster can convey hidden meaning about a topic but flyer can’t and flyer should be more attractive than poster.
You said that flyer can also convey deeper thinking like poster and poster should be attractive as well to hold readers’ attention, the essential difference is not this. Well, I agree with you but I think flyer is a unique poster which exaggerates the way of expression and it doesn’t need express any other meaning except original purpose.
No matter commercial or social flyer, the text content is always the most important part comparing to other components. The original purpose of flyer is distributing information to others directly and lead a content-oriented mindset to readers which can influence their cognition and further behavior imperceptibly. So if a flyer conveys some deeper meaning by posting ambiguous texts or images, the original purpose will be weakened in some degree.

And if images on a flyer plays a dominant role that text content would be ignored involuntarily by readers, the flyer may cause some misunderstanding because images on flyers are always polished perfectly based on authentic pictures. But the text contents should be authentic otherwise the flyer designer and distributor would be put into jail.

  1. Well, I understand better what you mean as the difference between a flyer and a poster, however, what a flyer says doesn't have to have a hidden meaning - just more information than a poster. A person can hold a flyer in the hand for more careful examination, immediatedly, later, or both. A poster is often good for only a fairly fleeting glance.

Not sure what you mean about the designer going to jail for a poorly designed flyer...

    Good reflection!
