Reflection of PPT
In China, teachers
are getting used to presenting by PPT provided by Microsoft. But most teachers
don’t know how to use it for teaching appropriately because they always just
move the texts from book to slides with little pictures or videos.
In my opinion, PPT
is used for presenting syllabus of teaching contents or keynotes to mention
teachers the preset steps of teaching in class and attract students’ attention
to make them concentrate on teachers’ teaching. Of course, teachers can add some
detailed contents on slides to make students be clear about the targets or real
criterial of study, but not all the contents of book. As we all know, keep
students focus on listening and studying in a long time is not easy for
teachers, and plain text display is totally harmful for students to pay
attention, they just feel boring when teachers retell the contents of book on
PPT.
So, I think teachers
can convert the plain texts to appropriate photos, infographics, mind maps, audios,
videos or animations as the substitute with brief text introduction because
they are easier for students to accept and understand. Teachers should also need
design the particular background of PPT according to the actual demands, not
fill different color on the white background or just insert a boring picture.
Well, OK. I understand teachers in China use PowerPoint a lot, although strictly as a linear presentation to accompany a lecture. I am sorry you see so little potential in visual media tools, social bookmarking, and mind-mapping.
ReplyDeleteIn America we do not teach so much on PowerPoint any more because it is overused, often in some very bad ways. Some of the issues we may touch on a bit in the Multimedia class in January and February. There are some innovative ways to use the hypermedia features of PPT, but PPT has become so ingrained as a linear presentation it is difficult for people to see it in any other way.
Prezi is a presentation tool that is increasingly used in place of PowerPoint - which offers the hypermedia dimension a little better because people are not so fixed on one way of using it. However, Prezi has moved from being free to being a fairly expensive service. In a sense, that speaks to its popularity. They are able to command a fairly hefty price, considering it is a subscription instead of a one time purchase. But, then, in America PowerPoint has gone to being a subscription, if one wishes to use the most up-to-date editions with the newer features.
Thanks for the explanation of how you chose to go this way for this reflection. :-)
