Reflection on Visiting to Greenville High School
Although it was a little hard for me to get up much earlier than before, I really enjoyed the visiting to Greenville High School because I have experienced a real American High School which is totally different from Chinese High School.
To be honest, Chinese high schools are more like disciplined council that students are not allowed to do anything without teachers’ permission, what they should do is listening carefully otherwise they will be punished strictly. But American high schools are more like pleasant families that students go there for teachers’ guidance and support, they can communicate with teachers equally and share their own creative opinions with classmates and teachers without tolerating misunderstanding and inexplicable despising from classmates. In Chinese classrooms, the consequence of questions is just true or false, not possible as American classrooms. By the way, I really love the various decoration of every classroom I have visited.

I saw the real flipped classroom which was only occurred in Chinese academic education trials, effective collaboration and adequate communication between teachers and students which are only happened in Kindergarten. More ideas about the difference from Chinese and American education inspired when I visited Greenville High School yesterday and I have a idea to formulate a detailed questionnaire for American teachers to work out why they are so different from Chinese teachers in teaching and getting along with students. I really don’t like the lecture-class at all.

  1. I would like to know more about your questionnaire idea. Most American teachers would not understand Chinese classrooms, though, to respond to why American classrooms are different. Perhaps they are different because our teacher education programs in the universities teach that active learning is far more effective than lectures.

Sadly, professors in other areas of the university do lecture more like Chinese high schools, I fear. But, teacher education only can do so much. Sigh...
