Reflection of Bookmarking and Mind Mapping
Maybe bookmarking functions very well for educational purpose in America that teachers can utilize it for resource searching and class resource repository building or other flexible usages, but I don’t think it’s suitable for Chinese teachers because many Chinese students won’t click those links in dedicated websites to see the details. In a sense, Chinese students prefer instant paper documents which can be read directly. Maybe you are confused about it because it does an easy job for students to click the quick link and print detailed resource, however, it’s the fact, many students regard the quick link as the recommendation that they don’t have to click for detail and read.

Compared with bookmarking, mind mapping is much more useful in Chinese education. Because of the systematic math training from primary school by doing so many exercises, Chinese students prefer problem-solving learning in powerful logic thinking and mind map is the best way to present this process. We usually cut a big deal into several smaller problems and find different corresponding solutions to solve them one by one, mind map can help us do that effectively because it makes this complex process virtual for us. Sometimes new ideas would be inspired in this process.

  1. I think social bookmarking never was used as much for students as for professional development for the teachers to use themselves.

The exception might be Diigo, where some teachers assigned students to use this methodology for group research projects so that all members of a group could share together the findings of individual members of the group.

Unfortunately, as the emphasis on testing has grown in the US, the trend toward research writing has decreased. We are starting to see a resurgence with the schools that have one to one laptops and chromebooks, but it has not yet returned to what it once was when these social bookmarking resources were more widely used.
