Reflection of online English
learning
As a foreigner in
America, the most difficult challenge I have to face is linguistic barriers, I
couldn’t communicate with you normally when I met you at the airport three
months ago. Fortunately, my English ability is getting better and better though
sometimes I cannot express my thinking exactly.
According to my
English learning experience, listening and speaking is much more important than
reading and writing. I studied English from junior high school in China, but I cannot
make sense about American’s talking and speak out a complete sentence as
response.
It is the inevitable
outcome of Chinese traditional examination-oriented English education because
it always emphasizes reading and writing which means regarding listening and
speaking as supplements. As a result, Chinese online English learning websites always
emphasize reading and writing.
Language is a tool for people to communicate
with others, it’s not an examination that everyone should pass. It’s the truth that
reading and writing are essential parts of English learning, but I think we
should pay more attention to listening and speaking without prejudice. So, I
think Chinese online English learning websites should provide more listening
and speaking resources than before such as precise English lectures, grammar
learning videos and podcasts about English speaking. It’s much more effective
than provide text only resources in my opinion.
I understand completely what you are saying. In American teaching of foreign language there is an emphasis on listening and speaking in balance with reading and writing. That is consistent with the American insistence on active application as more important than test taking in general - although students feel fully oppressed by taking tests, anyway. :-)
